Choosing a Winch Drum: Application Fit and Specification Checks

A buyer-focused guide to selecting a winch drum from the LBS grooved drum range by Shijiazhuang Junzhong Machinery Manufactruing Co., Ltd. It explains how to check groove type, rope capacity and rope size, material, structure, power source, rope entry direction, weight, temperature data and listed certification, and highlights where product listings conflict and need written confirmation before ordering.

Choosing a Winch Drum: Application Fit and Specification Checks

A winch drum stores and guides the wire rope on hoisting and pulling equipment. Its main jobs are hoisting and lifting. A grooved drum uses spiral, vertical or Lebus-system grooves so the rope wraps smoothly. If you are sourcing a winch drum for a crane, winch or other lifting machine, start with your own application. A catalogue name alone will not tell you whether a drum fits.

This guide uses the published LBS grooved drum listings from Shijiazhuang Junzhong Machinery Manufactruing Co., Ltd. to explain what to check. It does not give prices, lead times or performance guarantees. Confirm those in writing for your own project.

1. Start with the buyer's constraints

Before comparing models, write down:

  • The host equipment and application. Listed applications include offshore platform crane winches, port and wharf crane winches, tower crane winches, crawler crane winches and gantry crane winches. They also include construction, mining, water conservancy, forestry, wharves and logistics, for material lifting or flat dragging.
  • Rope length and rope size. These decide the capacity and groove pitch you need.
  • Drive. Electric motor, hydraulic motor or, for one listing, manual.
  • Mounting and interfaces. Do you need a flange, a shaft or a gear ring?
  • Environment. Marine or offshore service, temperature range and storage conditions.
  • Documentation. Which certificates your project or classification society actually requires.

2. Groove type: Lebus or spiral

All of the listings reviewed show a Lebus groove, and most also offer spiral grooves. The supplier describes the Lebus-style "double fold line" groove as a form designed for multi-layer winding. The groove runs parallel to the flange end face around most of the drum circumference and crosses over only in a very small area.

On some models (LBSWD-202310005 and LBSWD-202310002), the supplier describes a typical Lebus built drum as a welded plain drum with a welded grooved shell. If the shell fails, the sleeve can be replaced instead of the whole drum, which the supplier says can save costs. If you expect multi-layer winding, ask which groove form is proposed and whether the grooved shell can be replaced.

3. Rope capacity and rope size

The published ranges are wide. Use them as a screening tool, not as a promise for any single drum:

Model (type specification)Rope capacityRope size listedListed weight
LBSD-202310013 (single drum with shaft)10–1000 m3–200 mm100 kg
LBSD-20231001610–1000 m3–200 mm60 kg
LBSWD-20231000510–1000 m3–200 mm200 kg
LBSWD-20231000210–1000 m3–200 mm50 kg
LBSD-20231001110–10000 m3–190 mm1000 kg
LBSD-20231001010–10000 m3–190 mm100 kg

If your rope is longer than 1000 m, the listings point to LBSD-202310011 or LBSD-202310010. Each listing states that specifications can be customised, so send your exact rope diameter, length and number of layers. Ask for a drawing that matches them.

4. Material and structure

  • Material. LBSWD-202310005 is listed as carbon steel. The other models are listed as alloy steel. One product title mentions "stainless", but its parameter table says alloy steel. Confirm the actual material grade in writing.
  • Structure. Listed structures combine a flange, drum body ("simplified body"), pressure plate and rib plate. Some also have a gear ring (LBSWD-202310005, LBSWD-202310002). The supplier notes that grooved drums can be made with or without a flange and with or without a shaft.
  • Processing. The listings show machining at a CNC center. Customised colour and processing are also listed.

If your design needs a shaft fitted, the Single Drum With Shaft (LBSD-202310013) is the most direct starting point. Its overall structure includes a flange, drum body, pressure plate and rib plate.

5. Power source and rope entry direction

Most listings are for electric or hydraulic motor drive. LBSWD-202310002 also lists manual (hand) drive. The application notes say the LBS grooved winch drum is driven through a gear reducer. Several models offer left or right rope entry, so state the direction your machine needs. If you are building an electric drum winch, give the supplier your motor and reducer interface details. A drum alone is an accessory, not a complete winch.

6. Operating environment

Two listings (LBSWD-202310005 and LBSD-202310010) give an ambient temperature range of -40 ℃ to +45 ℃ and a storage range of -40 ℃ to +50 ℃. The other listings reviewed give no temperature data. LBSD-202310010 is the listing that names marine vessels and offshore platforms as its application. If your site is marine, offshore or very cold, ask for confirmed environmental limits for the exact drum you are quoted.

7. Certification and documents

Listed certification varies by model:

  • ISO9001 only (LBSD-202310013)
  • ISO9001/CE (LBSWD-202310005, LBSD-202310016)
  • ISO9001/CCS (LBSD-202310011, LBSWD-202310002, LBSD-202310010)

These entries come from product pages. Ask for the actual certificate copies, with their scope, for the drum being supplied. Do not assume one model's listing applies to another.

8. Commercial terms to confirm

The parameter tables list an MOQ of 1 piece, but some short descriptions show a minimum order of 100 pieces. Because the listings disagree, confirm the minimum order, price and delivery terms directly. This article makes no commitments on them.

When a listed winch drum may not apply

  • Your rope diameter, length or layer count falls outside the published ranges. You would need a custom design review.
  • You need a complete winch with motor, brake and controls. These listings describe drums as winch accessories.
  • You need a specific certificate that is not shown for the chosen model.
  • You need a drum for a twin-drum machine. The listings reviewed describe single grooved drums, so ask about your configuration separately.

Summary checklist

  1. Application and host equipment
  2. Groove type (Lebus or spiral) and whether multi-layer winding is needed
  3. Rope length, diameter and layers
  4. Material grade
  5. Flange, shaft and gear ring needs
  6. Power source, reducer interface and rope entry direction
  7. Temperature and environment
  8. Certificates and the commercial terms you need in writing

Send this checklist to the winch drum manufacturer with your drawings. That way, the quotation reflects your real operating conditions.
